Designing and testing for wireless coexistence can safeguard medical device operation
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (March 8, 2015) – ATEK Access Technologies today released “Wireless Coexistence: Pairing Wireless Medical Devices,” a free white paper from its Datakey brand that provides tips for ensuring proper wireless communication between medical devices in a shared wireless environment. It also discusses options for linking or pairing wireless medical devices.
“The number of wireless medical devices in-and-around medical facilities continues to increase at a rapid pace,” said Sherri McDaniel, president of ATEK Access Technologies. “It’s important that wireless medical devices coexist with each so that proper operation is maintained for these critical applications.”
The white paper introduces the topic of wireless coexistence and provides an overview of the guidance provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It also offers methods for achieving wireless coexistence between multiple instances of the same device that will be operating in close proximity. Additionally, the white paper features a case study about how Stryker Endoscopy uses portable memory devices, specifically Datakey non-volatile memory tokens, to link its wireless endoscopic video transmitters to their high-definition flat panel displays.
The Datakey memory tokens used by Stryker utilize solid over-molded construction, so the memory integrated circuit (IC) is completely encased in a durable, custom composite material. The memory token stores and transfers identification information that is shared between the transmitter and the receiver, thereby linking or pairing the two devices.
“Our Datakey portable memory devices eliminate the possibility of accidental pairing,” added McDaniel. “Using portable memory also makes it easy to pair multiple receivers to a single transmitter.”
