Datakey Series III Programmer Driver Installation Issues

Q: I am having trouble with the driver for the Datakey Series III programmers (e.g. SlimLink III, KeyLink III, etc.). What are the troubleshooting steps?

A: Below is the list of troubleshooting steps if you are having issues with the drivers for the Datakey Series III programmers.

  1. Download the latest driver. The latest signed drivers can be downloaded here.

Datakey Series III programmers now utilize Microsoft's WinUSB driver. This eliminates the issues that were seen when trying to install the previous kernel-mode drivers on Windows 10 and Windows 11 with certain security features enabled. For more information, see Steps 2 and 3, below. The link above allows you to download the WinUSB driver files that are needed when using a Datakey Series III programmer on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer.

  2. Some customers have reported getting a Code 39 error during driver installation. The best way to resolve this issue is to download the latest software (Datakey Series III Programmer Install Software Ver. 2.2) or WinUSB driver files, as mentioned in Step 1. If you trying to install older software (Datakey Series III Programmer Install Software Ver. 2.1 or earlier) that utilizes a kernel-mode driver, you may be able to use the older software and driver by disabling some optional security features in Windows 10 and Windows 11. One of these security features is called Device Guard. If you are getting a Code 39 error, check with your IT department if your computer is using Device Guard and if the following features can be disabled:
    1. Disable "Hypervisor-Protected Code Integrity"
    2. Disable "Device Guard"

The tool for disabling these features can be found on Microsoft's site:
      https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53337
  3. Another issue that can prevent the driver from loading is due to a compatibility issue with another Windows security feature. Check with your IT department to see if Memory Integrity can be turned off for the computer using the Datakey Series III programmer.

The following page on the Microsoft website provides the instructions on how to turn Memory Integrity off in the Core Isolation page of Windows Security:
    https://support.microsoft.com/...

Again, the best solution, if you are using a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer is to download the latest Datakey software and driver files, as mentioned above.
