PCN 20230907
07 September 2023
This product change notification (PCN) serves as the end of life (EOL) and last time buy (LTB) notification for the UFX4GB-I RUGGEDrive memory tokens. It only applies to the 4GB capacity of UFX-I memory tokens. See PDF for full details.

PCN 20220204 Rev B
04 February 2022 (Updated 12 July 2022)
This product change notification (PCN) documents changes being made to the UFX family of RUGGEDrive memory tokens. The USB controller IC used in UFX RUGGEDrive memory tokens has unexpectedly gone end-of-life (EOL). As a result, all UFX tokens are hereby designated with EOL status. The line is being replaced by the UFX-I line, also known as the Industrial UFX line. Because a new USB controller is being used, some USB features will be different on the new UFX-I tokens. Other changes are also being introduced. See the PDF for full details.

UFX RUGGEDrive™ memory tokens provide USB flash drive functionality in a proprietary form factor that is more robust than traditional thumb drive designs that use standard USB connectors. Internally, the UFX memory tokens leverage SD memory that utilizes MLC NAND flash. When the SD memory used in the UFX memory tokens goes end-of-life (EOL), ATEK qualifies a replacement SD memory device and updates our bill of material using our ISO 9001 engineering change order (ECO) process. Such a change recently occurred with the Datakey UFX4GB RUGGEDrive memory tokens. See PDF for full details.

The UR4410 panel-mount receptacle mates with Datakey UFX RUGGEDrive™ (USB) memory tokens, providing a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface for embedded systems. The back of the UR4410 receptacle features a standard 5-pin motherboard header for easy and quick integration into embedded systems. Standard cables connect the UR4410 to either a 5-pin 0.10” header or a USB Type A receptacle. The UR4410 is offered in three versions: IP65, IP67 and IP67 with EM reduction.

UFX memory tokens are OBSOLETE and replaced by UFX-I and UFX-IS RUGGEDrive tokens.
Datakey UFX memory tokens deliver USB flash drive functionality in a more robust and secure form factor than consumer flash drives. The tokens are available in capacities from 4 GB to 64 GB and utilize a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface. Each token contains a unique serial number which can be used for token identification or for encrypting on-board data.

Datakey UFX-I memory tokens deliver USB flash drive functionality in a more robust and secure form factor than consumer flash drives. As part of the Industrial RUGGEDrive line, UFX-I memory tokens are rated for operation from -40°C to +85°C. Each token contains a unique serial number which can be used for token identification or for encrypting on-board data. UFX-I tokens feature 3D TLC NAND flash, where UFX-IS tokens utilize 3D TLC NAND flash operating in pseudo-SLC mode.

The UFX PC Adapter provides a convenient way to read data from or write data to UFX RUGGEDrive™ memory tokens using a PC. The adapter plugs into USB type A ports. When a UFX token is then inserted, it appears to the computer as a USB Mass Storage device (i.e. a USB flash drive). No special drivers should be needed.

How to Interface a USB Flash Drive to a Microcontroller

Although USB flash drives are easy to use, designing a microcontroller-based embedded system that supports a removable USB flash drive can be a challenging task. This white paper gives an overview of USB and highlights several USB host design options that will support the use of a USB flash drive. The paper discusses some of the design considerations for the USB connectors, power supplies and PCB. It is chock-full of links to helpful resources to make sure your microcontroller-based embedded system design will successfully interface to a USB flash drive.
